Phuket Dive Sites

Although the Andaman Sea and Similan Islands have many amazing dive sites, we don't have enough room to name them all. Below you will find some of the most popular, and a few of our own favourites.

A BIG " thank you" to Pocket Divesite for allowing us to link to their excellent Divesite Maps.

Koh Doc Mai

Moderate to strong currents - Advanced divers and experienced open water divers

Big Sea Divers

Approximately 13km from Chalong Bay. A small island which springs up from the sea bed. This is a wall dive covered with both hard and soft corals and an amazing array of reef fish. Moray eels can also be spotted hiding in the cracks and crevices. The deepest part of the dive site sits at around 20m but we tend to average around the 10-15m mark as this is where most of the interesting life can be seen. A popular site for night dives. Shark Point

Moderate to strong currents - All levels of diver

Approximately 25km from Chalong Bay. This is a very colourful dive site which consists of 3 pinnacles, one of which breaks the surface. Covered with both hard and soft corals along with large sea fans. The deepest point of the site sits at around 22m at the sandy bottom and is also known for it's sightings of Leopard Sharks. This site was declared a Marine Sanctuary by the Thai Government in 1992 to protect it from commercial and spear fishing. Click here to see a map of the dive site.

Anemone Reef

Moderate to strong currents - All levels of diver

Big Sea Divers

Approximately 26km from Chalong Bay. This is a very pretty dive site covered with loads of hard and soft corals, especially Anemones (hence the name) which are home to the beautiful Clownfish. The shallowest point of the reef sits just 4m below the surface and gently drops down to a sandy bottom at 30m at it's deepest point. This site is also home to different types of colourful triggerfish, groupers and barracuda. Also seen here on occasion is the majestic Leopard Shark which sits well camouflaged in the sandy outcrops. King Cruiser

Moderate to strong currents - Advanced divers and experienced open water divers

Approximately 26km from Chalong Bay. This wreck started it's life as a Passenger Ferry that sank in 1997 while on route to the Phi Phi islands. It had strayed off course and managed to hit Anemone Reef (see above) and sank within an hour. Now an artificial reef best known for it's abundance of marine life and where you can see groups of lionfish swaying in the current. The shallowest point of this site sits at about 15m whilst it's deepest point is at about 32m. Click here to see a map of the dive site.

Koh Racha Yai

Moderate currents - All levels of diver and good for beginners

Big Sea Divers

This is an island with many dive sites, Staghorn Reef, Lucy's Reef and Bungalow Bay just to name a few. These sites consist mainly of hard corals with a few soft corals and large sea fans. Known for it's many varieties of reef fish such as triggerfish and bannerfish you can also spot the odd octopus and schools of false barracudas. These sites are known for their clear waters and good visibility which make them great for beginners. Click here to see a map of the dive site.

The Phi Phi Islands

Moderate currents - All levels of diver and good for beginners

Two of the most popular sites here are Bida Nai and Bida Nok which are at the southern tip of Phi Phi Le. Here you'll find large gardens of staghorn coral surrounded by numerous colourful reef fish. It is also quite common to see Leopard Sharks. Consisting of overhangs, swim-throughs, rugged caves and sheer walls there is always somthing different to see. The Similan Islands

Moderate to strong currents - Advanced divers and experienced open water divers

Big Sea Divers

This world famous site is made up of nine Islands and is truly an amazing place to dive. Approximately 100km northwest of Phuket with stunning white sand beaches. Because there is so much to see here, and the distance from Chalong Bay this is generally a Liveaboard destination. With some quite strong currents this really is a Drift Divers dream. You will pass hard coral beds which can slope down to 40m or pass large boulders and rock formations teeming with marine life. Click here to see a map of the dive site.
