It seems that everyone has started to talk about the planet. Are issues that we face today worse than years gone by and better than the future? We believe that we all have a responsibility to be aware of our environment and take steps to protect and conserve it. The underwater world is suffering! As divers we are all too aware of the damage and harm being done to life below the surface. We know that humans are responsible for the state of the planet and we can help or hinder it's recovery.
We at Big Sea Divers support responsible diving! It seems like common sense not to break off a piece of coral from a reef for 'Just a little souvenir'......however we see it happening on a regular basis. It can take thousands of years for the beautiful coral reefs we see on our dives to grow, and if everyone were to take 'Just a little souvenir', then before long we will indeed have destroyed another chunk of the underwater world.
So remember to 'Take only pictures, and leave only bubbles'.
The human race has always been obsessed by greed. 100 million sharks of all kinds are caught each year (most illegally) and then have their fins sliced off, (imagine somone doing the same to your fingers and toes!!) and then simply dumped back into the ocean to die a slow death! This horrific act provides the ingredients for 'Shark Fin Soup' which is then consumed by those keen to show their wealth, and can be bought for up to$300 a bowl. Please be aware of what is happening to our oceans. Whales, which are the most majestic ocean movers are still being hunted and slaughtered in the name of 'Research'. Baby seals are still chased, beaten, stabbed and shot to provide 'Potions' and 'Pelts' to those with image problems. Turtles, Whales, Sharks, Dolphins, Seals and fish life in general are suffering, and with them the underwater world we cherish could disappear. There are many excellent organisations out there trying to help, Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, IFAW and British Divers Marine Life Rescue to name just a small group.
Please be aware, and let's protect what we have, so future generations can marvel, and be inspired by our world.
