Thai Culture and Nightlife

The Culture

Big Sea Divers

For those of you who have not been to the beautiful Kingdom of Thailand before, there are a few things that you should know about the people and their culture. The island of Phuket is mainly a Buddhist population, but there is also a small Muslim culture here too. They are a friendly and polite people who give the country it's well earned name of 'The land of smiles'. Very conservative in their nature, but always willing to help, you will be amazed and charmed by these beautiful people. As when visiting any country it is always welcomed if you show respect to their religion, but here especially to the Monarchy. The King and Queen are held in very high regard for all the good work that they put in to helping their people. Many Thai's will be seen wearing yellow shirts on a Monday to show respect for their beloved King. This is because he was born on a Monday and each day of the week has a different colour. More recently it was discovered that pink and green were just as important as these colours symbolise 'Good health, Longevity and a Peaceful reign' for the King.

If you get to visit one of the many beautiful Wat's (Temple) whilst on your stay, sleeveless shirts and shorts are discouraged. Shoes must be removed before entering any place of worship. Many shops, restaurants and bars also ask the same as feet are considered of low stature. It is also thought rude to step over a person if they should be sitting or lying down. Instead you should walk around them.

There are many beautiful beaches for you to enjoy whilst you are here, but please remember that topless or nude sunbathing is a definite no! Thai people generally do not get annoyed as this is seen as losing face. There is a saying here of 'Mai Pen Rai' which translates to 'Never Mind, or No Problem' and is something which is good to bear in mind. Always appreciated in any country is if you try to learn just a few common words such as hello and thank you, so buy a phrase book or just ask a Thai, they will be sure to help.

The Nightlife

We are fully aware that diving is not the only reason people venture to Phuket. It also has a world wide reputation for stunning nightlife. The young vibrant playground that is Patong is where if you choose you can party all day and night. From GoGo bars to themed pubs, there is literally something to raise the free spirit in all of you. Areas like Kata and Karon with an amazing array of bars and restaurants that cater to every taste enabling you to have a different experience everytime you visit. Last but not least the Chalong area which we like to call home. Here you will find eateries that cater for Thai food lovers to traditional Pub Grub. When we are not diving we can normally be found at 'Happy Days', a friendly English run bar where the welcome is warm and the beer is always chilled and cocktails that are simply mouthwatering. Here you will find a great mix of divers, non-divers, expats and locals who are always willing to share local knowledge and tales of Thailand with you.
